2009–10 Ayr United F.C. season

The 2009–10 season was the 100th season of competitive football by Ayr United.
In the season of 2009–10 Ayr United celebrated their centennial season by gaining promotion to The First Division after the play-off victory at The Excelsior Stadium against Airdrie United. Ayr were promoted after a five-year stint in the Second Division. Airdrie United were later rewarded First Division status after Livingston were double-relegated to the Fourth Tier of Scottish football for financial reasons. Ayr were promoted along with Fife side Raith Rovers; the other club joining the First Division after being absent for half a decade are Inverness Caledonian Thitle, who were relegated from the SPL at the end of the 2008–09 season. Ayr United where relegated at the end of the season when they finished bottom of the league.
==Cup form==
The 2009–10 season saw Ayr United have almost the exact cup form as the previous season. Ayr were knocked out of the Challenge Cup by third division team Albion Rovers at home in the first round, again. Ayr shortly recovered from the home defeat by winning away at Forthbank Stadium against Stirling Albion
2–1 (aet) after going 1–0 down. Ayr were rewarded with a home tie against SPL Side St. Mirren, but were defeated 2–0 by the Paisley club in only the second round, again. Ayr made the trip to Banff to face Highland League outfit Deveronvale; Ayr won the tie 1–0 with a Ryan Stevenson goal; last time the clubs met, Ayr united left Princess Royal Park with a 6–0 win. Ayr were brought a home tie against Second Division club Brechin City; Ayr took the lead early in the game and maintained it to book the place in the fifth round. The fifth round of the Scottish Cup saw Ayr head to Tayside to face Dundee. Ayr again took an early lead, but it wasn't to last with Dundee scoring two goals.
